Collection: Jeff Bear

Jeff Bear is an accomplished Indigenous producer, journalist, and storyteller whose career has been dedicated to bringing the stories, voices, and perspectives of Indigenous peoples to Canadian television and audiences around the world.
His interest in television began in childhood and was shaped by an early encounter with the groundbreaking work of filmmaker Alanis Obomsawin. After studying at the University of Regina and the Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity, Jeff began his career as a newspaper journalist with Windspeaker. While covering the First Ministers’ Conference on Aboriginal Rights in 1985, he became increasingly aware of the differences between Indigenous perspectives and the way mainstream media reported on Indigenous issues. That experience helped shape his commitment to telling stories from an Indigenous point of view.
In 1990, Jeff joined CBC Toronto, where he worked with Barbara Frum and the production team behind The Journal. During his time at CBC, he produced eight documentaries before going on to work on the network series First Stories, which highlighted the lives and experiences of Indigenous people across Canada.
In 1999, Jeff started up Urban Rez Productions with his wife, Marianne Jones. 
Throughout his career, Jeff has been inspired by artists, filmmakers, and storytellers who have helped shape Indigenous media.His work reflects a lifelong commitment to Indigenous storytelling and to creating space for Indigenous voices in Canadian media.
