This rich and evocative epic of a Japanese-Canadian experience following World War II is filled with the vibrant intensity of one family's struggle to rebuild their lives and to be accepted as Canadians. In the 1920s, Kimi, a young and beautiful "picture bride," arrived in Vancouver from Japan; by 1941, she was a widow with nine children to support. During the war, the Canadian government's evacuation and internment of all West Coast Japanese-Canadians forced Kimi Ohama and her family to move to Alberta where they were permitted to work as labourers.

The Ohamas saved enough to buy land in southern Alberta's Great Plains desert, where they turned what began as impossibly barren land into a thriving irrigated farm that produced championship potatoes over the next 45 years. Yet in 1992, a bank foreclosure uprooted the family again, as they joined thousands caught in the economic crisis of farming that is eroding a fundamental Canadian heritage and lifestyle. The Last Harvest is the heartwarming story about one woman's strength, determination, and love, in the face of turbulent historical events and uncontrollable economic forces.
