Inside/Out: A Prison MemoirInside/Out: A Prison Memoir

For most people, life in prison is a world that is unfamiliar. People who have been in prison are hesitant to talk about their experiences so for the most part what society hears are versions that are sensationalized or used for political or ideological purposes. For many years Patrick Keating was reluctant to share his story due to shame and fearing ostracization.

Inside /Out: A Prison Memoir is a true story. It is the story of one man's search for community inside and outside of Prison. It's the story of a man who strived to become invisible. It's the story of his search inside his own Penitentiary files that he has received through the Freedom of Information Act. The files touch off memories. Memories of outside. Memories of choices made. His introduction to drugs. His introduction to crime and the almost 10 years behind Penitentiary walls.

Inside /Out: A Prison Memoir is the story of the people Patrick Keating met inside the Penitentiary that influenced his life. Of his transfer from Quebec during the tension-filled time of the first referendum and his being put on a plane and flown across the country to Matsqui Penitentiary in British Columbia where he enrolled in a theatre course only to find that it introduces him to the possibility of a new way of life.

Artist's Statement:

For many years I was reluctant to talk about my past. Most people never knew about my background and the years I spent in the Penitentiary. There came a time when I realized that I had been given an enormous gift. I was introduced to the arts while inside. That was when universities came into the federal system and gave courses. Those courses gave me a new way of looking at the world, at society. One course in particular on theatre set me on a path. When I heard that Richard Payne, the man that introduced me to theatre all those years ago, had passed away, I knew I had to repay the gift he had given me. I wanted to tell my story to try to dispel the myths that surround the incarcerated — to show that everyone inside is someone’s father, or mother, or brother, or sister. We are our own stories. I hope that this work encourages and incites other incarcerated people to tell their stories, tell their truths. There are far too many stories that are left untold. Important stories untold because of shame, guilt and the fear of being ostracized.
