This documentary traces the struggle to find a practical route through the mountains from the fur-trading forts of the northern interior of British Columbia to the Pacific Ocean. The Caribou Gold Rush spurred on the attempts to create a passage through this "perilous gateway" - the Fraser Canyon. First a trail, then a mule train were established, before the Royal Engineers hacked a narrow wagon road through the canyon rock. Perilous Gateway uses both historical paintings and archival footage to tell the story of what is still a major transportation route in British Columbia.
