Ninstints is an abandoned Haida village on remote Anthony Island in the Queen Charlottes. Through powerful images of the local totem poles, this film explores the significance of the village's past and evokes a sense of the people who once lived there. Combining recent footage with archival photographs and films, it describes both the growth and the near destruction of the great cultural and artistic traditions enjoyed by the Haida people in this area. It looks at the removal of some poles in 1957, and the present-day conservation program of the Provincial Museum. This is a comprehensive compilation of information about the Haida, their history, and their art in a half-hour educational package. The sound track blends Haida songs with original synthesized music. A study guide, Ninstints: Haida World Heritage Site, is available from UBC Press.
