"We all saw the labyrinth as a pattern of life, a way of walking the road, of journeying together. Journeying toward a concept of justice which we understood as peace."

- Dr. Michael Hadley, Centre for Studies in Religion and Society, University of Victoria

This inspiring restorative justice project began with a dream to build a labyrinth on the lawn of Christ Church Cathedral in Victoria, British Columbia for members of the community to use in walking meditation and prayer. Dr. Michael Hadley, a founding member of the Restorative Justice Coalition, joined Sister Judi Morin, Catholic Chaplin from the William Head Institution, to include the participation of several inmates under the work release program.

Michael Hadley explains how the creation of the labyrinth fit with the concept of restorative justice-a philosophical and spiritual movement reflecting on criminal justice reform. He and members of the parish found it central to their faith to reach out to marginalized people, to nurture their participation and prepare them for reintegration into the community.

Inmates joined a group of church volunteers to plan and build the labyrinth, solving all the complexities of design that came with the project. They found it motivated them to think, engage in teamwork and give something back to the community. It was a welcome process, one that contrasted with their previous self-centered lifestyle and isolation within the traditional retributive justice system.
