"There are so many older women who feel left out of society; there's nowhere for us to go. These are vital, capable women with years of experience. I don't want that to get wasted."
- Betty Nickerson, age 75, founder of the Amazing Grays, The Globe & Mail October 1997

There are presently more than 1.1 million Canadian women over the age of 65, and this number will skyrocket as the baby boomer generation ages. Current society does not value our older population. Old age is viewed as something to medicate, fear or deny; older women are treated as invisible, with limited useful functions or purpose. Stereotypes about "little old ladies" perpetuate a number of social, economic and political inequalities. It is crucial to older women's health that they see themselves, and be seen, as participating, important forces. Senior women, with their lifetime of experience and wisdom, are one of our most valuable resources in building strong communities.

On Vancouver Island, a group called the Amazing Grays host an annual gathering to celebrate aging. It is an opportunity for women to acknowledge their value and receive support in the third stage of life. These women do not see growing older as something to fear or resist--instead, they welcome it. The Crone, or Wise Woman, once highly regarded, is being reclaimed.

This video presents six twhemes on the aging process: the force of gravity, menopause, cronehood, role models, life passages, and feminine spirituality. The video can be viewed in its entirety or by section for discussion. A facilitator's guide is included.
