At the base of the Cascade Mountains in British Columbia's Manning Park, six teams prepare to trek high into the alpine meadows. But this is no ordinary wilderness expedition. The captains of each team cannot climb, hike or walk. Meet three of these captains - world traveller Linda McGowan, basketball enthusiast Roger Jones and Vancouver City Councillor Sam Sullivan - all active, adventurous individuals who are confined to wheelchairs. This inspiring documentary chronicles their participation in Access Challenge, a three-day, 60-kilometre hike through glorious and rugged terrain.

The hikers make the trek through help from two groups of people: volunteer engineers who build their adapted trail-riding vehicle and the four-person teams of friends and family who accompany them. Together, they use teamwork, technology and ingenuity to combat the unpredictable forces of nature. But the challenges faced in the BC wilderness are perhaps less monumental than those these team captains have already overcome. As they journey, these individuals reveal the strength of character, creative thinking and passion that has buoyed them through life despite setbacks. Ultimately, what they share is their quest not only toward the top of a mountain but toward a renewed sense of personal freedom.
