In this first documentary from Series 1 of La Voix des Mechif, a young woman in Winnipeg explores her family history and learns about the history of the Métis people. The Métis flag is the oldest Indigenous flag in the Northwest, dating back to 1816. The film explores early history of the Métis people, or Mechif as they are also known--their success as buffalo hunters and involvement in North America's first "free trade" which was the pemmican trade in Canada and into the United States. They asserted their declaration to have the right for free trade in 1849, much to the consternation of the colonial powers in Canada.
