This third documentary from Series 1 of La Voix des Mechif, explores the history of Canada's Métis people, dispossessed from land allocated to them in Manitoba as they moved across the prairies into Saskatchewan and later Alberta. The contrast between how the Alberta Government handled the situation from that of Saskatchewan and Manitoba provincial governments reverberates today in the treatment of the Métis people.

During the 1930s when the Prairie Farm Rehabilitation Act established the need for community pastures in Saskatchewan, some of the Métis people who had settled close to the Mantioba/Saskatchewan border returned from work in the fields to find their houses had been burned to the ground, leaving them with nothing more than the clothes on their backs. By contrast, the Alberta Government, recognizing the difficult circumstances that the Canadian Government had created for the Métis in its policies, created The Métis Settlement Act to give land to dispossessed Métis. This made it possible for Métis people to thrive in that province, retaining both their culture and connection to the land.

Two films from this series on the history of the Métis people precede this one: Le drapeau: l’origine de la nation (The Flag: the origin of the Métis nation) and La Terre: la base de la nation (Land: the Base of the Nation).
