Dr. Raoul McKay (1934-2014) was a highly educated Mechif man who worked tirelessly within the system to improve the lot of Indigenous people. The grandson of a Manitoba buffalo hunter, he finished high school in an era when many people didn't and went on to complete four university degrees, including a Ph.D. in History from the University of Toronto. He found a way to work around racism and systemic racism to achieve his goals.

Raoul was convinced of the need to abandon the "anthropological" approach to the study of Indigenous people. One of the first Indigenous faculty members at a Canadian University (Trent), he also helped to establish the pre-Med program for Indigenous students at the University of Manitoba which graduates more Indigenous doctors than most Canadian universities. Among his many honours was an Aboriginal Achievement Award for his work in Education.

Raoul was a powerful storyteller. Founding the film production company First Voice Multimedia Productions with his wife Iris provided a vehicle to bring authentic stories of Indigenous people to the screen. In addition to films on internationally acclaimed painters Daphne Odjig, Alex Janvier and the group of Indigenous artists that art critics dubbed "The Indian Group of Seven," one of Raoul's most satisfying achievements was La Voix des Mechif, a eries of documentaries on the history and culture of his own people, the Red River Métis.
