Maria LeRose

Maria LeRose, producer/director of Desperately Seeking Doctors, is an award winning Television Producer and Interviewer/Host. With over 25 years production experience to her credit, she has traveled the globe as an on-camera journalist, doing interviews and telling people's stories. Her background in Psychology brings to her work a deep understanding of what makes people tick, and considerable skills as an interviewer in getting people to open up and share their thoughts and feelings. (Maria holds a BA in Psychology from UBC and is currently doing graduate work in Educational Psychology.) Maria has hosted and contributed to numerous regional and network television programs including CBC Network's series Midday. Among the hundreds of people she has interviewed are some of the most recognizable faces of our times - from celebrities like Michael J Fox and Charles Schultz (of Peanuts fame) - to world leaders like Mikhail Gorbachev, and the Dalai Lama.

Desperately Seeking Doctors is the latest of many TV documentaries and series that Sharon and Maria have co-produced and co-directed over the past 15 years. Both filmmakers were born and raised in Trail, B.C. although they did not meet until many years later when they were both working as broadcast journalists in Vancouver. Their collaborative credits include nine biographies for CBC Television's Life & Times series, including films about Anne Murray, Mr. Dressup, and Lynn Johnston; Beyond Memory, the story of five people living with Dementia; and the four-part documentary series Mental Illness in Children and Youth, for Knowledge Network. Together, they co-created and co-produced the CBC Network daytime talk show series In the Company of Women. Their documentaries have received national and international recognition including the Columbus Festival's Silver Chris (Best of Division), the Gracie Allen Award (from the Foundation of American Women in Radio and Television), and Finalist at the International Health and Medical Media Awards (The Freddies) in the category of Children's Health.
