Michael Crummey thinks his writing has been influenced by growing
up in Newfoundland, where there is enormous communal guilt about
the disappearance of the Beothuk people. Guy Vanderhaeghe feels
part of a Saskatchewan writing tradition because the presence of
the land is central to his stories. Tim Lilburn expresses a creative
connection to his home because his people are buried there. These
and other writers delve into the significance of the land in Canadian
literature, the sacredness of writing, and the responsibility writers
feel to contribute to the greater world.
